Pub ban not a factor for most planning to give up smoking

MORE than four out of five smokers south of the Border who are planning to quit claim they have not been influenced by bans on lighting up in pubs.

A study carried out for pharmacy group, Boots, found that 18.1 per cent of smokers polled were planning to give up and a further 42.4 per cent said that they would "possibly" do so.

But the online study conducted in England last week found that 83.7 per cent of those considering quitting said the planned ban was not a factor in their decision.

Smoking is set to be outlawed in enclosed public spaces in England next summer, following bans in Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

Of the 31.8 per cent who vowed never to quit, nine out of ten insisted that they would not change their mind after the ban.

The study by research group Experian found that more than seven out of ten of those considering quitting expected to rely on "will power" to make the break.

Ruth Bosworth, an expert in stopping smoking for Boots Health Club, said: "Everyone has the right to be protected from harm and enjoy smoke-free air.

"For any smoker trying to quit, smoke-free environments will increase their chances of success."
