NEW HAVEN BARS GET SMOKING OPTION
Restaurants and bars in New Haven will soon be able to decide
whether to allow or prohibit smoking under an ordinance passed
by the City Council on Wednesday.
The council voted 4-3 to pass a revised law that will take
effect as soon as the city publishes it, possibly by the end of
the month. Councilman Ron Steinman, R-at large, had proposed a
public hearing before the final passage, but his proposal was
voted down.
Councilman Floyd Ball, R-1st, introduced the ordinance in April
because he thought it was a good ordinance and would be
enforceable. He was disappointed, however, that the end result
did not prohibit smoking on parkland.
"At least it is better than what we had," Ball said.
