Marlboro promotion features a 1-pan cake
It's not unusual for companies to publish booklets, brochures and advertisements featuring recipes.
But generally those companies sell a food product.
Today's recipe was featured in a promotion by Marlboro - yes, the cigarette.
That may seem strange at first blush, but Marlboro cigarettes are produced by Philip Morris USA Inc., whose parent company is the Altria Group.
And Altria owns more than 87 percent of Kraft Foods, whose brands include Kraft, Maxwell House, Nabisco, Oreo, Oscar Mayer, Philadelphia, Post and Tang.
Not so strange after all.
MARLBORO ONE-PAN CAKE
• 2½ cups flour
• 1½ cups sugar
• ½ cup cocoa
• 2 teaspoons baking soda
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 2/3 cup vegetable oil
• 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla
• 2 cups cold coffee or water
• 1/3 cup sugar
• ½ teaspoon cinnamon
Stir together flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt in an ungreased 12x18-inch baking pan (a large jelly-roll pan). Make 3 wells in the mixture, pour oil in one, vinegar in one and vanilla in one.
Pour in coffee and stir all with a fork until well mixed. Spread into an even layer.
Combine 1/3 cup sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle half over batter.
Bake in 350-degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes. Sprinkle remaining sugar and cinnamon over hot cake.
Cool 15-20 minutes before cutting. Serves 6-8. - Mari Hurley, Royal Oak
